Breast Lumps

Q: Hello CancerAware, I found a lump in my breast while bathing last week. What should I do?

A: Firstly, don't panic. Secondly, go to a doctor immediately and have the breast lump evaluated. Do NOT ignore any breast lump hoping it will go away. See a doctor immediately to have it checked out.

The doctor among other things will recommend imaging tests such as a mammogram or breast scan. A biopsy of the breast lump may also be recommended.

OTHER WARNING SIGNS OF BREAST CANCER:

Although a lump is the most common sign of Breast Cancer and EVERY breast lump must be evaluated by a doctor, there are other warning signs you need to know about.

Some of these warning signs are visual changes that cannot be felt.⠀⠀

The warning signs of breast cancer include;⠀⠀

1. Lump, hard knot or thickening inside the breast or underarm area.

2. Swelling, warmth, redness or darkening of the breast.⠀⠀

3. Change in the size or shape of the breast.⠀⠀

4. Dimpling or puckering of the skin.⠀⠀

5. Itchy, scaly sore or rash on the nipple or around the skin of the breast.

6. Pulling in of the nipple or other parts of the breast.⠀⠀

7. Nipple discharge that starts suddenly.⠀⠀

8. New pain in one spot of the breast that does not go away.⠀⠀

In most cases, these changes may not be cancer, however if you experience any of the above, see a doctor immediately.⠀⠀

Also, if you’ve had a benign lump in the past, don’t assume a new lump will also be benign. The new lump may not be breast cancer, but it’s best to make sure.⠀⠀
