The Silent Battle of Cancer in Nigeria

In the 1990s, the world saw high fatalities from HIV and AIDS. In the last decade, cancer has replaced this, quickly becoming the new disease plaguing both the developed and emerging countries.

To a large extent, a functional healthcare system is the main difference between emerging and advanced nations in this regard.The figures are alarming in Africa. In recent times, the cancer mortality rates are as high as those of hunger, HIV and AIDS.

The case rate is even more terrible for us here in Nigeria; with our lack of an efficient healthcare system, affordable cancer resource and treatment centres.

The country has less than 100 oncologists for a population of almost 200 million; totally inadequate for the management of the growing epidemic that cancer in Nigeria is gradually becoming. The state of these hospitals and cancer treatment centres are appalling for a country of such economic standing.

Only very few hospitals in the country offer radiotherapy treatment..

The sheer hopelessness that cancer patients in Nigeria are faced with is frightening and sad;

Over 100,000 Nigerians are diagnosed with cancer annually, out of which about 80,000 eventually die.

At CancerAware, our work is aimed at reducing these appalling statistics through education, screening and patient support.
